Drinking water safety is a vital issue across Canada, especially in rural and Indigenous communities without a centralized water treatment facility. Existing filtration systems tend to require costly filters or a stable electricity supply, or they do not sufficiently treat drinking water. To help communities that lack such facilities or supplies, IEESC student Jianan Yin is working with the Lab2Market program on a portable, user-friendly, and cost-effective filter. Her gravity-driven water filtration system removes bacteria and heavy metals from drinking water. The project is currently in the pilot testing phase and Jianan hopes that the system will benefit Canadians who do not have access to a reliable clean drinking water.
