What impact might your shampoo or medication have on water systems? IEESC Ph.D. student Xiaying Xin is studying the effects of personal care products and pharmaceuticals on algae using synchrotron technology at the Canadian Light Source. Large amounts of these products enter the environment and interact with the biological system. According to Xin, this research is important because little is known about the ecotoxicological effects of these pollutants on aquatic organisms, which can be more toxic and harmful to algae.
