IEESC Students Visit Estevan – Boundary Dam/Shand

February 29, 2016

On February 29, IEESC students visited SaskPower’s coal-fired stations at Boundary Dam and Shand. Since 2014, the two stations have been equipped with Carbon Capture and Storage (CCS) facilities. As the world’s first commercial-scale CCS plant with a fully integrated post-combustion carbon capture system, Boundary Dam is a leader in clean coal technology. In the same community of Estevan, Shand power station provides on-site testing for worldwide CCS technology improvement.

The students found the tour to be an excellent introduction of carbon capture and storage and learned more about the simulation and control systems of CCS processes. After the tour there was discussion about clean energy opportunities in Saskatchewan with SaskPower’s staff members for further research.
